Light the Way Invests in Ugandan Nurse Recognition and Development
June 22, 2022 – POEA-licensed nurse recruitment agency Health Carousel Philippines announced five universities that will receive Light the Way Nursing Faculty Development Scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year.
The recipient universities are:
- St Paul University Philippines, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Valley
- Holy Angel University, Angeles City, Pampanga
- Palawan State University, Puerto Princesa, Palawan
- University of Cebu, Cebu City
- University of Baguio, Baguio City
Health Carousel Philippines will provide each partner university with two scholarships to be used to elevate the education of current nursing school faculty to the doctoral level or to create new faculty members by helping them achieve a master’s of nursing. The awards will cover the cost of tuition, books, and other related fees.
Better-Educated Faculty Key to Student Success
Supporting the advanced education of nurse educators is vital in creating high-quality nurses. The globally recognized National League for Nursing (NLN) believes that doctorally prepared educators are needed to develop models of cost-effective education, and prepare a workforce to meet the needs of a reformed health care system, both nationally and globally. However, in spite of the increasingly complex demands in higher education and healthcare that require the response of doctorally prepared nurses, only 25 percent of full-time nurse faculty at all ranks have doctoral degrees.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Carnegie Foundation share this view with the latter calling for doubling the number of nurses with doctorates by 2020 to add to the number of nurse faculty; a goal that has sadly been missed. (A Vision for Doctoral Preparation for Nurse Educators, NLN, 2013)
“Its clear that the nurse educator’s role in student success is vital and that the level of education of the nursing school faculty plays a valuable part in this as well,” state Connie De La Cruz. “Our Faculty Development scholarships are one way to improve NLE Exam pass rates, elevate skills of young nursing school graduates, and help Filipino nurses practice at the highest standards of patient care here and as they work abroad.”
Free Nurse Educator Training Being Provided
Scholarships aside, Health Carousel Philippines has helped the development of nursing school faculty in other ways too. In 2021, they launched their Faculty Development Training, designed to help nursing school instructors adapt to the online learning environment brought on by the COVID pandemic.
In total, 178 nurse educators representing 39 nursing schools in Region 2 and 3 benefited from a multi-day program designed to help them adapt to virtual and online learning. This free training was a success, with 98% percent of participants stating the learning topics addressed the development needs of their nursing school educators.
Further free nurse educator training is to be announced for later this year.
